Winter and Holiday Photography Ideas for your Weddings and Engagement Sessions

Winter and Holiday Photography Ideas for your Weddings and Engagement Sessions.

The winter and the holiday season is here and many couples’ are getting engaged, planning their weddings and actually celebrating their nuptials during this time. This season is one of my favorites for the beautiful blue light, holiday decorations and most of all, for the snow! However, the winter season does have many challenges due to cold temperatures, dark light and early sunsets. But with a little ingenuity and planning, couples’ can take advantage of the festive season and have gorgeous and unique pictures that can be used for Save the Dates, Christmas cards or to just have as keepsakes. Below are some tips and tricks that I have learned throughout the years to take advantage of the winter and holiday season.

Dress warmly!

I know this seems incredibly simple but oftentimes with the chaos of wedding planning, brides forget to buy a stylish coat or jacket to keep cozy during the couple session. I always recommend my brides’ to borrow or buy a fashionable bolero, fur or faux-fur jacket that they absolutely love and will look great for pictures. Too often, the cold weather cuts the couple session short and the photographer can only shoot for a limited amount of time. And this includes shoes too! Bring along your snow boots as well. Boots look fabulous with wedding dresses and your feet will be nice and warm in the snow.

Embrace the snow!

Photographers adore the snow! Why? Because the snow gives us a white canvas where you can add color, use the snow as a playful prop or just photograph the lovely scenery. As time goes on, more and more of my couples’ are opting for a snowy engagement session or to spend some of their wedding day in the snow. And what better prop is there than snow? I have had some pretty amazing winter engagement sessions where my couples’ have gotten down and dirty, which makes for some memorable images!

Get Festive!

The Holidays offer some pretty fantastic backdrops, lights and decorations that you can use in either wedding or engagement pictures. This image was taken right along Michigan Avenue in Chicago, where Santa was greeting holiday shoppers next door to the wedding venue. I asked Santa’s helpers if we could take a picture, and they were more than happy to let the couple snuggle up to Santa. There are a multitude of holiday lights and decorations that you can easily use as great backgrounds and provide a festive theme for your wedding or engagement pics.

Pick your winter wedding venue carefully!

Since the winter weather can be cold, rainy, snowy or downright frigid, it makes sense to pick a photogenic venue so you can take pictures both inside and outside. When you pick a venue that has great spots inside and right outside the venue, you won’t have to worry so much about getting fun and interesting pictures if the weather decides to turn ugly. In Chicago, we have some gorgeous venues that warehouse architectural items which can be used for vintage-themed backgrounds and props. And, some old-school hotels that have both ambiance and history. No matter where you live, just make sure you pick a venue where you can shoot close to home if the weather gets nasty.
